In the LKAB mine in Kiruna Magnetite of high quality is found. Mining started on the surface around 1900. Around 1960 all activity was moved underground. Today (2004) mining is done at a depth of 900m as measured from the now disapeared peak of the mountain. The terasses visible in the picture above are a remainder of surface mining.
Ore and further processed products are transported by rail to the two shipping harbors in LuleƄ and Narvik.
View over the roofs of Kiruna to the chargo train station into the late winter sunset.
Magnetite samples. Both samples are about 4cm in size.
